Who hasn’t heard of social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter? Defined as an online platform focused on building networks among people who share common interests and activities, social networks are all the rage. Where else can you instantly share photos, invite friends to last minute events, make friends with people that share your passion, or connect with old friends?
Have you ever wondered about new sites and applications under development, ready to launch, and what they have to offer? The following is a sneak peak at what’s to come:
• Starqle, an Indonesian firm, is developing a new social networking site under the name Ruang Main made specifically for children based on one-on-one interviews with children and their parents. This site will offer games, encyclopedia information, articles, videos, and chat features.
• Zog Media introduces ZooLoo to the public. This site is a combination website building platform and blog that uses your personal domain name to access everything from one place. Features include Graffitti blog, iPhone apps, web dashboards, social integration, and share option button.
• New York University students are developing Diaspora. The key feature for the user is to have complete control over personal information such as videos, pictures, and chat without being subject to privacy policies that ever change and information being sold out to third-parties.
• BuddyPress 1.2 an active plugin for WordPress is launched. Known as the social network in a box, it can covert a website or blog into a full social networking application. Users can create profiles, post messages, make connections, and interact with groups. The application is a completely free open source that allows the user to stay in control of their site and create a customized experience.
As with any social networking site, remember to be aware of your cyber-surroundings, what information you are sharing, always listen to your inner voice, and use common sense. Most importantly have fun making new friends and connecting with old ones.
